Home learning for Year 2 - Woodpeckers
Dear Woodpeckers Parents and Children
Thank you for sharing some of your lovely work with me. As ever, the idea is to do a lesson of Maths and a lesson of English each day to help with the routine of learning, to do the ‘frequently’ section a few times a week and then to do other Learning Journey and Science lessons when the mood is right across the week. I look forward to seeing what you get up to.
Good luck, shipmates!
From Captain May!

English
English:
Day 1: Discuss the recount from the first week of this term – it described something that had happened to you – it was like an entry in a diary. Look at the Beast’s diary entry – compare it to the text beneath it, which is taken from the book. Ask: what is the same? What is different? Who has written the first piece? How do you know? (first person, I). What shows it’s a diary? Ask your child to create a list of things that need to be included when you write a diary (similar to the recount). Finally ask them to find these in the diary entry – they could underline different aspects in different colours or point them out and discuss them with an adult.
Day 2: Ask your child to choose the part of the Beast’s journey which they liked best (setting off until reaching the sea; the sea section; the final walk and arriving in the city). Ask them to pretend to be the Beast and tell you about their journey. Help them remember to use the first person, past tense, adverbials of time, description, feelings (which are hopefully the list they created in the last session). Now ask them to write their diary entry as the Beast telling that part of his journey. There is a word bank and a list of adverbials of time to help.
Day 3: Spelling investigation and spellings – find out about when w comes before vowels and how it can affect the pronunciation of the vowel.
Day 4: Firstly, ask your child to look at their diary entry and spend some time editing it, checking spellings, etc like they did with their story before half term. Then look at the next double page of the story and ask: Why do you think the Beast is still lonely? Why did he make his journey? What was he looking for? Has he found it? Ask your child to be the Beast talking on the radio or to the reporter.
Day 5: Next week, we will be planning and writing the news report about the Beast, so today is about becoming familiar with this different style of writing. The News reports and questions sheet contains 3 different news reports to read and discuss. Look for what makes them different to other texts they have read. There are also 4 comprehension questions for each report. These look at different reading skills, so ideally the children will try all 12 questions.
Maths
Maths: This week, we’re going to look at measurement, specifically mass.
Day 1: comparing mass
Day 2: measuring mass (g)
Day 3: ordering mass (g)
Day 4: measuring mass (kg)
Day 5: exploring mass
Science
Science:
Firstly, see if your child can recall the names of the different parts of a plant by looking at the Label parts of the plant sheet. If possible, look at the fruits and vegetables you have and ask your child to guess which parts of plants they are. Now watch the Plants we eat PowerPoint to find out about which parts of plants we eat. Finally ask your child to draw and label different fruits and vegetables and categorise them into the parts we eat (stem, flower, seed, fruit, leaf, root). There is a sheet to do this on if you choose and it also includes some pictures of fruits and vegetables to help.
Learning Journey
Learning Journey:
Use the Making maps and routes PowerPoint to explore maps a little further and access the tasks.
