Dear Wrens Parents and Children,
Welcome to Week 4 of Term 6. Whether you are now at home or in school we will all be working on the same activities throughout the week.

Phase 3 Consolidating: Warm up by having a look at all your phase 3 sounds and see how many you can recall.
Today’s sound is ‘ow’.
Ask your grown up to write these ow words- cow owl town how now down
Can you find the digraph ow in the word and underline it?
Can you choose a word to put into a sentence?
E.g. ‘I went to town’ ‘The owl is in the tree’
Phase 4: Firstly recall all of your Phase 3 sounds.

Sometimes it can be hard to hear the sounds of some letters when put together with others. This week we are going to look at these tricky combinations.
Look at this picture of a star
The word star sounds like it begins with ‘sd’ but words don’t start with these two letters together. Try writing the following words which all begin with the st sound stop, start, stick, stack.
Phase 3 - Today’s sound is oi
This sound always comes in the middle of a word.
Ask your adult to say the following words: ‘coin’ ‘boil’ ‘soil’ ‘join’ ‘foil’
See if you can segment the sounds e.g. c-oi-n and then write the word.
Can you write a sentence? E.g. ‘I can see the cow on the soil’ ‘I have a coin’
Practise spelling the tricky words from phase 4 said so he she we me be have like some come
Look at the word, cover it up, try to write it and then check to see if you have got it right!
Our tricky sound combination today is sk/sc. Look at this picture Scarf sounds like it begins with sg butwords don’t begin with these two letters together. See if you can write the words scarf and scoop. Then try skin and skip with sk at the beginning.

Phase 4 -Our tricky sound combination today is tr which is often wrongly written chr.Can you have a go at reading these words:: tree, trash, trick, tram, truck. Notice how they all stary with the consonants tr. Have a go at writing the sentence The truck got stuck in the tree. Remember not to write chr.

Phase 4: Firstly practise spelling the word my.Use the ‘look, clever, write, check’ method.
Play word Pairs on Phonics Bloom to practise your reading of words with adjacent consonants.
Phase 3:Today recap all the sounds we have done this week and last week - ar or igh ur ow oi.Create 2 sets of the sounds and play pairs with them or just see how quickly you can recall each sound.

How did the end of the story make you feel? Were you surprised?
Did you predict the ending? When the tadpole said he wouldn’t change, did you guess what might happen?
How long do you think the frog will wait for his ‘beautiful rainbow’?
Did you like the ending?
What do you think will happen next?
Print out these pictures from the story. See if you can put them in the correct order. For a challenge you could add some words to retell the story.
Today we would like you to imagine that you are the frog at the end of the story. Can you write a letter to the caterpillar? Include questions that you ask the caterpillar? Say how you feel now that she is gone.
Can you start your letter ‘Dear Caterpillar and end with ‘love from….’ For a challenge you could include your address at the top.
Print out the speech bubbles picture and add in the speech for the butterfly and the frog. Remember to think carefully about the sounds in the words you use .
Today see if you can write your own new story about two different animals that fall in love .
Well done to those of you playing on Numbots. Please do remember that this is designed to be played little and often, so just 5 minutes at a time four or five times a week. Each section aims for the children to develop their understanding of the concept before they move on :-)
We will start our week by really practising our number knowledge to 20.
Adult- arrange a group of objects (probably about 15) and ask your child to estimate how many they think there are.
Remember to make a sensible, careful guess, thinking realistically about how many there could be.
Count to find out- adult check your child’s counting- are there any teen numbers that are tricky or muddled?
At this point you may now practice counting different amounts of objects up to 20.
Play a counting game ‘Don’t say 20”
Take it in turns to say one, two or three numbers at a time. But you DON’T want to be the one who says 20, or you lose!
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 (the blue player loses!)
To make this more visual you could use a number line to 20 and place on counters as you say the numbers.
Make sure you are careful when saying the teen numbers that they are in the right order.
You could use this opportunity today to practice writing the numbers to 20. Careful that your numerals go the right way around.
Recap your mental maths of the numbers to 5. Look at one hand- this is 5. What is 5 made up of? 4 +1, 3+2

This episode is all about splitting numbers into smaller numbers and then combining them again.
In school we use these regularly to help us with our understanding of number.
Use your own cherry diagrams or ‘part-part-whole models’ to investigate numbers. Choose a number between 11 and 19. Make that the ‘whole’
Now how many different ways can you find to make that number using the two parts?
What objects at home could you use to help you with this?
We would really like to see you recording some maths with this activity. You could draw your own part-part-whole models or use this example.
Adults- count out some objects and ask children to let you know if they spot a mistake (you could use a toy or puppet if you prefer!)
E.g. 12, 13, 41, 15, 16, 17 - What was the problem?
Ask your child to teach the toy how to count properly and show them on a numberline what order the numbers should go in.
Today we will look at finding one more and one less.
Use lego/ cubes / blocks to make a tower of e.g. 11. How many will be one more than that? What about one less?
Try this with a few different numbers- how quickly can you identify what will be one more and one less?
You could use a numberline to help you.

Let’s play with some doubles today.
Gather a collection of small toys to use for your maths today.
Adult make a small group in front of you.
Now ask your child to “double it” by creating an identical group in front of them. E.g. double 4.
If you have dominoes you could play dominoes and look for all the ‘doubles’
Play the game ‘doubles’. You will need two dice.
Roll the two dice. If you roll a ‘double’ (two numbers the same) then you score a point.
Take turns. The first person to three points wins!

Use some number cards to 10 or to 20. Select two of them and create your own blockzilla monster.
Can you demonstrate which is the bigger number and record this?
E.g 2 < 7

Can you remember the song ‘ 5 little speckled frogs’ which we often sing in school? Can you make the 5 little speckled frogs and their log and act out the song?
Create your own frog life cycle! You can use any materials you like!
Try making frog cakes!
This week Number 10: Share books.
What is your favourite book? Ask the other people in your house about their favourite book. I wonder why you like it? Do you like the characters or where it is set? I would love to hear about your favourites!
